Ms. Ibis’s Bookmobile Cheddar Straws
County Librarian Ms. Ibis runs the Desert Rose bookmobile — stories after supper, crumbs optional but encouraged.
What landed in my mailbox
“Sharp cheddar, two cups grated fine. One stick cold butter cubed, cup of flour, pinch cayenne, pinch smoked paprika. Pulse in food processor till sandy; add ice water by tablespoons till it holds. Roll, cut thin strips, twist, freeze ten minutes, bake 375°F till gold.”
I over-twisted the first batch — they looked like modern sculpture. Second batch: modest spirals, audible crunch, zero grease on paperback jackets (spot-checked).
Carl’s verdict: Five stars for shelf-stable joy. Pair with paperbacks and a porch light; the straws keep talking after the chapter ends. Ms. Ibis adds: “Quiet crunch respects plot twists.”
