Band Director Quail’s Booster Lemon Bars
Band Director Quail — tears of joy at the pie auction — claims citrus “cuts through rehearsal fatigue.” These bars allegedly paid for two plumes and a tuba valve. I’m a believer.
What landed in my mailbox
“Shortbread base: butter, powdered sugar, flour, bake till barely blonde. Curd: four eggs, cup of sugar, zest of two lemons, half cup juice, tablespoon of flour to keep it honest. Pour, bake till set, dust with powdered sugar like stage snow.”
I zested with a light hand; Quail’s note said “brighter than the judges’ clipboards.” The second pan disappeared at choir practice — unrelated conspiracy.
Carl’s verdict: Five stars. Sharp, sweet, and loud in a good way — like a metronome at exactly the right tempo. I’d trade one corner for a second plume myself.
