Tortoise Volleyball Completes Five-Set Comeback; Bench Serves Iced Tea Between Points
QUAIL HOLLOW GYM— Mesquite County Community College’s Lady Tortoises dropped the first two sets to the visiting Jackrabbit Juniors and looked, briefly, like a group project due at midnight. Head Coach Theodora Tortoise—no relation to the mayor beyond shared resolve—called time, adjusted the lineup, and reminded everyone blocking is “just neighborly interference.”
Middle blocker Rita Rattlesnake (liberal arts major, criminal timing) found the ceiling on her spikes in set three. Setter Penny Pipit delivered gravy-smooth sets until the visitors’ knees begged for mercy. The fifth ended 16–14 after a challenge that required the ref, Mr. Owl, to confer with both coaches and his own bifocals.
BOOSTERS NOTE: The concession stand ran out of sliced lemon before lemon loyalty did; donations accepted for new nets and a second cooler.
