Rugged E-Reader: One Dust-Storm Week in the Cab
Carl’s rating: 8.5 / 10 dog-eared pixels
I’m reviewing the concept of “rugged” the way the county reviews gravel roads — with boots on the ground and low expectations for polish. This reader lived in my truck: cup holder, passenger seat, once slid under a folding chair at a tailgate.
The good: Matte screen laughs at overhead sun better than my sunglasses. Rubber bumper ate a drop onto caliche without drama. Page buttons tactile enough to find without looking — crucial when you’re pretending to watch the grill.
The grit: After a real dust event, micro-USB flap needed a Q-tip truce. Not waterproof — “splash-resistant,” which means I didn’t test it with a hose on purpose.
Verdict: If you read outdoors more than indoors, this class of device earns the glove box. If your library is 90% bathtub reading, buy a different flavor of gadget and a rubber ducky.
